Why EDICT DOS windows always popup when NJStar Japanese WP opens?

This problem only happends in a particular case, that is, the EDICT file's generated time is advanced than your current system's local time, so NJStar needs to create new index files. EDICT file is generated in Australia, time zone GMT+10, the file's generated time is stored as local time, if you download the EDICT file on the same day when it is created, most likely the above mentioned case happens.

Professor Jim Breen's EDICT project is being updated as new entries are being added. Here is how to update NJStar's J-E/E-J dictionary with the latest entries from Dr Breen's EDICT project.

1. Auto Update in Version 5.0

From program menu Tools - Dictionary, click 'Update EDICT' to update EDICT and other dictionaries at one button click.

On windows Vista, please right click on the Japanese WP icon on the desktop, then select 'Run as Administrator', otherwise you will get an update error because NJStar can not write file into c:\program files\njstar japanese wp\ folder.

2. Manual Update:

  • The master copy of EDICT (edict.zip) is in "ftp://ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo". The easy way to check if the version is the latest is from the size/date.

  • Once you've downloaded the above "edict.zip" file, unzip/expand it to your "NJStar Japanese WP" folder which is normally at "C:\Program Files\NJStar Japanese WP\".

  • Run "NJStar Japanese WP" and click on the dictionary icon on the program tool bar.

Please wait until the update windows are closed.

As NJStar WP is a word-processor, capable of reading variety of Japanese JIS files, it is likely that all the Japanese messages you receive can be read correctly with NJStar provided that "escape sequence" of the original format is not lost.

If you suspect that this is the cause for corrupted data, then try first to save the message to a disk within your Email program, then read the file from NJStar Japanese WP.
